How SWA 2026 Identifies Women for Recognition

A guide to SWA 2026's confidential referrals, three forms of merit, verification and independent category-based assessment.

Behind every award is a question: how do we identify achievements that deserve recognition, including work that may not already have wide public visibility? For its fifth edition, Somali Women Awards is using a confidential, invitation-only professional referral approach. Selected institutions, professional associations and individuals with relevant knowledge may submit recommendations through privately distributed category-specific channels. Candidates can be considered for three distinct forms of merit. Pioneering achievement recognizes barrier-breaking milestones and expanded opportunity. Professional excellence reflects exceptional accomplishment and leadership within a field. Transformational contribution recognizes meaningful improvements for people, institutions or communities. These forms of merit are alternatives, not a checklist that every candidate must satisfy. The 2026 awards cover ten categories with defined assessment criteria. Referred achievements and supporting information are reviewed for relevance and verification before independent category-based assessment. Judges are expected to declare conflicts and recuse themselves where appropriate, helping protect the integrity of the process. A referral does not guarantee that someone will become a nominee, finalist or recipient. The public is not being invited to submit open nominations, and award results will not be decided through public voting. Confidentiality is important throughout the process. Information submitted for professional assessment is not automatically public material, and sensitive judging information is not published as part of the website’s editorial coverage. SWA’s objective is straightforward: recognition should rest on credible achievements and meaningful contribution, not simply on visibility or popularity.
